Municipality of Marum
The municipality of Marum is located in the south west of the province of Groningen and comprises of eight villages: Marum, Nuis, Niebert, Boerakker, Lucaswolde, Noordwijk, Jonkersvaart and De Wilp. Marum, with a population of 5,500 is the largest. This is an area known as the “Westerkwartier”, close to the border with the province of Friesland . The village of Marum has a junction on the A7 motorway and is also well served by public transport, with connections to Drachten (12 km) and Groningen (25 km).
Living
Marum is a comfortable place to live and has excellent shops, sport and leisure facilities. Over the years many people have chosen to settle here and there has been a gradual increase in population. This is a quiet and friendly area set in a tranquil unhurried environment with lots of nature areas nearby.
Education
In the municipality of Marum there are ten primary schools: Marum (2), De Wilp (2), Boerakker (2), Jonkersvaart (1), Niebert (1), Noordwijk (1) and Nuis (1). In the villages of Leek and Drachten there are several secondary schools.
Sports
The municipality of Marum has facilities for many kinds of sports: gymnastics, tennis, football, swimming and skating (in winter) and there are also many clubs for the various sports. There are several big events every year like the motor cross in Trimunt, bicycle races, the Marumer Omloop (Marumer Run), the Survival Run ‘Boerakker’ and a New Year’s Run in De Wilp.
Leisure and culture
The district of Marum offers many opportunities for outdoor pursuits like walking, riding and cycling through the many attractive parts of the area: the ‘Dwarsdiep’ to the north of Marum; the ‘Coendersbos’ in Nuis and the ‘Haarsterbos’ in Marum.
Marum has several museums and other attractions. The “Iwema Steenhuis” in Niebert, is the last remaining “steenhuis” (a medieval stone farmhouse for the landed gentry in earlier times) in the province of Groningen. It has been preserved in its original medieval form and its barn has been made into a museum. The “steenhuis”
is adjacent to one of the oldest footpaths in the Netherlands: the “Malijkse” Path. Near here we also find the Coendersborg, in which the museum ‘t Rieuw’
shows the development of agriculture in this region before mechanisation. At Niebert we find the only remaining wheat mill in the municipality of Marum.
Economy
Marum has a healthy economy with a diverse selection of businesses. There are more than 500 companies registered in the municipality. Although the area has been traditionally an agricultural area and there are still many agricultural based businesses, Marum has also attracted many companies from other sectors of the economy, typically the building industry (contracting), (electronic) repair businesses, transport firms and other trade and professional business services.
